One student was killed in a shooting at a North Carolina high school Wednesday, authorities said.
Police said they responded to Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem at 12:07 p.m., and found a male student with a gunshot wound. The student was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries, the city’s police chief Catrina Thompson said at a Wednesday press conference.
The shooter, who is believed to be a Mount Taber student, is still on the run.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Winston-Salem Police said in a statement that the campus had been secured and they “are doing everything possible to keep students safe.”
“We are actively investigating what happened and will share confirmed information when available,” they added.
The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, where Winston-Salem is located, said all students would be transferred in stages to a nearby YMCA for parents to pick up.
